My best of 2008

Mon Jan 26, 2009, 12:13 PM
2008 was a stellar year for media. It didn't have much more going for it but if you wanted to be entertained, this year had something for everyone. here are my picks for the best 2008 had to offer.

Movie of the Year: Let the Right One In
This film is ah-mazing! I was pretty excited about this ever since I heard about it being at the Toronto Film Festival. The film is provocative, disturbing, and gorgeous. You never really know how to feel at any given point and you can tell the director wants it that way. It was hard deciding between Dark Knight and this, but in the end I just felt this was better for me personally.

Runner Up: The Dark Knight
I loved this film. It was over 3 hours long and I wouldn't change a thing (other than the voice, but that goes without saying). Everything in this was top notch, the acting, the writing, filmography, all of it.

Most Want to See: The Wrestler
I've loved every movie Darren Aronofsky has done so far, I'm sure this will be the same. All I can think when I see the trailers is that that's what the Daredevil movie should have felt like.

Worst: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Nuked fridges! Tarzan LaBoof! Crystal aliens! Jungle Chase scenes! Super Black-Ops Ants! That movie sucked! It's just sad because if you read about the original script it sounds SO good. [link]

Game of the Year: Burnout Paradise
I am still, to this day, addicted to this game like crack. This is from a guy that dislikes racing games of almost all kinds, that's how good it is. The game is beautiful and the crashes always look as good as the first time you watch one. Add to that the free and paid DLC that they keep releasing and this game just keeps giving you reasons to play it.

Runner Up: Fable II
This game is a prime example of a product that is thoroughly polished and perfected. Everything in the world, the characters, art, story, etc. are SO cohesive. Unlike Fallout 3(a game I very much enjoyed), where you are totally aware at all times that you are a walking stats sheet and nothing more.

Most Want to Play: FarCry 2
A game that's open world, first person at all times, and set in Africa? Yes please!

Worst: Legendary
This type of game would have been mildly good in 1999.... maybe. It's VERY mediocre, to the point where it's horrible. The gameplay is boring at best and the whole game consists of monster closets and over the top scripted events.

TV Show of the Year: House
This is Procedural Drama at it's best. I could watch Hugh Laurie non-stop for the rest of my life and be entertained.

Runner Up: The Colbert Report
Stephen Colbert is undoubtedly one of the funniest people on this planet. Every night this show comes on it's a great episode.

Most Want to See: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
I don't really know much about this show. I've heard it's very funny and it really just looks like a show I would be in to.

Worst: Knight Rider
This show is the definition of bad television. The terrible writing, bad color correction, painful techno-babble, and over-the-top product placement makes this the Uwe Boll of TV shows.

Video Podcast of the Year: The Totally Rad Show
If my personality took the form of a show, this is exactly what it would be. My week completely revolves around it. My favorite host is Jeff. I don't have an older brother but if I did I like to think that's what he would be like. I adore him.

Audio Podcast of the Year: 1up Yours
I'm not really sure what this show is gonna be like in 2009. half the cast has been laid off over the holidays. In 08 though, this podcast was THE authority on video game culture. It was just so refreshing to see something video game oriented that was "mature" in tone.

  • Mood: Content
